A new type merit formula has been introduced
in the January proof run – the proofs will now be thrice yearly instead of
quarterly. The Type Merit formula has been rewritten to reflect industry
changes and is the biggest overhaul for a number of years. The new formula
will more accurately reflect health, welfare, balance and longevity in the
dairy cow although the ultimate measure of profitability has not been
ignored.
For information on the terms used here please
visit the Glossary page.
The main emphasis of the new formula is on
functional type – udders, feet and legs. The mammary system now comprises
40% of the total score with feet and legs at 30%. The remaining 30% is made
up of the body traits with less emphasis now on stature and angularity and
more emphasis on chest width and rump width. So the breakdown is now as
follows (the same for UK and International bulls):
40% Mammary
30% Legs & Feet
30% ‘Goal Trait’ of Longevity – calculated
using Stature, Angularity, Body Depth, Chest Width, Rump Angle and Rump
Width.
As a result, Type Merit will now be more
positively associated with increased Lifespan, £PLI, Fertility Index,
Locomotion, Fore Udder Attachment and Mammary composite generally, whilst at
the same time reducing Cell Counts.
APRIL 2008
There have been very few changes to the
rankings from January to April and there will be a detailed report on the
August run.
